Format: DVD
Release: May 25, 2010
Rated: R
Runtime: 94 Minutes

The Movie:
If you are someone that spends alot of time watching videos on YouTube or FunnyOrDie, then there's a pretty good chance that you have already heard of the comedy group called "Derrick Comedy." For the rest of the people that are unaware of them, the group consists of Donald Glover (NBC's Community), DC Pierson and Dominic Dierkes.

Since the age of seven, the Mystery Team has been dedicated to being kid detectives to solving child-like mysteries. The Mystery Team consists of Jason, the master of disguise, Duncan, the boy genius, and Charlie, the strongest kid in town. Now they're all eighteen years old, about to graduate from high school, yet haven't grown up. They still ride their bikes everywhere, only drink chocolate milk and still playing detective. Only now, the town no longer has the love for the Mystery Team they once had, and are actually sick of them.

A little girl sees their sign, and asks them to find out who killed their parents. The Mystery Team accepts, hoping this case will prove to everyone that they can be real detectives. Only, they have no idea that this case will take them into a violent conspiracy that leads to their lives being threatened and jeopardizing their lifelong friendships.

If you are a fan of the NBC Thursday night comedy shows, then that's another reason for you to check this movie out. You have Donald Glover (Community), the beautiful Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), the innocent-looking and beautiful Ellie Kemper (The Office), Kevin Brown and John Lutz (30 Rock), and Bobby Moynihan (SNL).

If you enjoy shit and puke jokes, sex jokes, and vulgarity, then this movie is for you. While it may not be a blockbuster comedy, it has all the requirements to turn this film into a cult hit. And between his success in Community and now Mystery Team, Donald Glover is definitely going to have a successful career in comedy.

Presentation:
The film is presented in a 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The image quality is hard to judge because it seems to be jumping around. For the most part the image looks crisp and actually made me forget that I was watching a dvd and not seeing this in HD. But then there are some scenes that look incredibly soft. Colors look real strong, with the skintones looking pretty accurate, but the black levels aren't as deep as you would expect. For a low-budget comedy, the image is definitely passable.

Audio:
The Dolby Digital 2.0 audio track does its job well. Dialogue is clear and easy to hear, with a well sounding score written by Glover himself. Nothing here that's gonna make your speakers reach their full potential, but on a positive note, no complaints on the audio either.

Bonus Material:
  • Audio Commentary - Featuring Dan Eckman, DC Pierson, Dominic Dierkes, Donald Glover and Meggie McFadden.
  • Making Mystery Team (6:22) - A short feature that provides some behind the scenes footage. The highlight of the movie is seeing the "lunch" table that consists of Jolly Ranchers, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Raisins, gum and those Oatmeal Cream Pies.
  • Deleted Material (4:07) - Not your average deleted scenes, instead this is a small amount of jokes that didn't make it into the movie.
  • Pre-Production Test Scene (2:25) - A rough cut of the opening of the film.
  • Who is Wally Cummings? (5:57) - A fake featurette about the career of Wally Cummings (Donald Glover).
  • Sword Club - A list of people who saw the movie more than once during its limited theatrical run.
  • Theatrical Trailer

Bottom Line:
If you are a fan of Derrick Comedy, you're going to want to buy this dvd. For the people that like the stupid-raunchy humor, you definitely want to give this a rental. The movie has some hilarious moments and memorable scenes, and the audio commentary is definitely worth listening to.

And for those that want to check out some of their hilarious short videos that brought them to fame go to:
